Breastfeeding Through the Festive Season: A Cheerful Guide for Moms

Breastfeeding and the holidays

The festive season is a time for celebration, connection, and indulging in all the joys of the holidays. For breastfeeding moms, it can also come with questions: Can I have that extra mince pie? What about a glass of bubbly? How do I keep up my milk supply with all the activity?

At the South African Certified Lactation Consultants (SACLC), we’re here to help you navigate the festive season with confidence and cheer! Here are some handy do’s and don’ts to keep you and your baby happy while celebrating the holidays.

Do’s for a Festive and Healthy Breastfeeding Journey

🎄 Do Stay Hydrated

All the festive running around can make you forget to drink enough water, but staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining a steady milk supply. Keep a water bottle handy, especially if you’re spending time outdoors in the summer heat.

🥗 Do Choose Nutritious Foods

Enjoy your holiday treats, but balance them with nutritious options. Think lean proteins, leafy greens, whole grains, and healthy fats. These will keep your energy up and ensure your breast milk is packed with essential nutrients for your little one.

🥂 Do Plan Ahead If You’re Drinking Alcohol

The good news? You can enjoy a celebratory drink, but timing is everything. Alcohol enters breast milk at the same rate it enters your bloodstream. A general rule of thumb: wait about 2–3 hours per drink (depending on your weight and the strength of the beverage) before breastfeeding. Alternatively, express milk beforehand for your baby’s next feed.

🛌 Do Prioritise Rest

Yes, it’s easier said than done during the holidays, but rest is vital for your milk supply and overall well-being. Accept help when it’s offered, sneak in naps, and try to stick to a manageable routine.

🤱 Do Find Time to Nurse or Pump

With the excitement of the season, it’s easy to skip a feed or pumping session, but consistency is key for maintaining milk supply. If you’re away from your baby, make time to pump regularly to keep your supply steady and avoid discomfort.

Don’ts for a Stress-Free Festive Season

🍹 Don’t Overdo It on Alcohol

While it’s safe to have an occasional drink, avoid binge drinking. Excessive alcohol can affect milk production and potentially harm your baby. If in doubt, consult your SACLC or a healthcare provider.

🧁 Don’t Skip Meals

It’s tempting to forgo meals when you’re busy entertaining or attending events, but your body needs consistent energy to produce milk. Keep snacks like nuts, fruit, or yoghurt on hand to fuel up during busy days.

☕ Don’t Overload on Caffeine

Coffee and tea are a festive-season staple for many moms burning the candle at both ends. A little caffeine is fine, but too much can make your baby irritable or disrupt their sleep. Stick to one or two cups per day.

🥩 Don’t Ignore Food Safety

Be mindful of food hygiene, especially when indulging in festive treats like seafood, cold cuts, or leftovers. Foodborne illnesses can affect your health and, indirectly, your milk supply. When in doubt, opt for freshly prepared dishes.

🏃‍♀️ Don’t Forget to Relax

Stress can impact your milk supply and your enjoyment of the holidays. Practise deep breathing, take short walks, or simply steal a moment to cuddle with your baby—it’s the perfect way to reset and reconnect.

Extra Tips for a Festive Season Full of Love and Milk

  • Breastfeeding in Public: With festive outings and gatherings, you might find yourself breastfeeding on the go. Pack a lightweight nursing cover or a comfortable breastfeeding-friendly outfit for convenience.

  • Dealing with Well-Meaning Advice: Holidays often come with unsolicited advice from relatives. Smile, thank them, and follow your instincts or consult your SACLC for trusted guidance.

  • Celebrate the Little Wins: Whether it’s managing a feed during a family dinner or successfully pumping amidst the festivities, acknowledge your efforts and celebrate your journey.

The Best Gift This Festive Season

This holiday season, remember that your baby doesn’t need fancy gifts or elaborate plans—they need you, your love, and your milk. Every feed you provide is a gift of health and connection, and you’re doing an amazing job.

From all of us at SACLC, we wish you and your family a joyful, peaceful, and milk-filled festive season!
